Monday Outfit: Elevating Stripes

Feb 12, 2024

Dressing for Work from Home is a switch. I still want to wear a blazer every day (but until I buy a few more comfortable blazers, that’s not an option), and I stare longingly at all of the pretty sheath dresses that fill my closet. But with outfits like this, WFH-attire doesn’t look too shabby.

I mean, are you seeing this image from last year’s LOFT catalog? I haven’t shopped at LOFT in a minute (mostly because I’m holding off on buying spring things til I get my closet cleaned out), but if I had seen this, I would have purchased all of it. Now, all there is to do is recreate it.

Jacket // An olive jacket with stripes is a classic combination. I own a utility-style jacket that’s casual and sporty, but this photo got me thinking about buying a more modern cropped style. The jacket in the photo is a silkier style, which was not easy to find. But I did locate a few softer, stand collar jackets like this Open Edit jacket in a longer length, and this dark green bomber from Target. If you don’t mind a sportier style, this Free People Movement jacket is a great pick.

Top // Any easy striped tee will work here, but I like the v-neck tee for opening up the neckline a bit. A lightweight striped sweater would also be a nice option.

Pants // A pair of “real pants” that are both fluid and comfortable are the way to go to achieve this look. This pair from Renee C are jersey wide legs. They look perfect for sitting at your desk all day. Sizes fun 4-12. A friend also swears by these Normal Kamali pants, which are similar. Need a real waistband so you can also wear them to the office? These Boden pants are the way to go; they run up to size 22.

Accessories // I started with the shoes. I keep putting these Madewell ballet flats in my cart, and it’s just time to pull the trigger, as I need to retire my Rothy’s. (My feet changed shape during pregnancy and they’re not comfortable anymore.) I’ve also looked at these Coach Emilia flats, which have a thicker sole.

For the bag, I chose this incredible AllSaints Half Moon crossbody that is on my birthday wishlist. It’s such a classic style, and it has a relaxed chic to it. Plus, AllSaints bags are a really well-made middle-tier option for women who don’t want a $1,000+ bag but want something made with high-end materials.

Lastly, I chose these silver hoops with a ribbed edge from Luv AJ that gives them a unique look. They’re selling out fast. And if you’re looking for a mid-price fashion jewelry brand, give this one a try. The pieces are easy to wear, but stylish. I love this silver horse bit bracelet.

For the styling, this is an easy look, so I’m probably not wearing makeup with it unless I have a meeting. On my makeup free days, I use this Erborian CC Red Correct Cream that improves the look of my skin. It feels a bit lighter than the Dr. Jart Tiger Grass Cream that I used for years. And it’s an easy thing to throw in a gym bag or a swim bag.

Also, if you’re having one of those days when you planned to wash your hair, but didn’t have time, try this I DEW CARE Tap Secret dry shampoo. It applies with an applicator to get right up to the root and volumizes, while reducing shine.

Here’s the thing with that AllSaints bag, which looks soooo good it tempted me too…but I ultimately returned it. In images, the bag looks really sleek and you don’t see any excess strap material. In reality, the strap doesn’t have a loop or anything securing it to the bottom of the bag, so it just hangs down. It’s a pretty significant amount of strap and the fact that it’s just dangling like 6 inches below the curve of the bag really took away from the sleekness of the look, IMO.

This is not a critique of the clothing choices here because they are lovely. But ohmygosh when did cotton t-shirts start costing $100? I’ve been on the hunt for t-shirts the last few weeks and have just been mind blown 🤯 at the costs. In my mind t-shirts were in the $25-$35 range.

Unless you want tissue thin garbage, or you’re willing to risk it with an Amazon t-shirt made who knows where, they’re $100. Though I just ordered a COS t-shirt to try that is $49.

For a great staple t shirt that’s thick and washes well – LL Bean Pima cotton short sleeve crew. It’s $25, and white t shirt is not see through at all. After 1.5 years I finally spilled something on it that didn’t come off and I am ordering another

thanks for this! I had been looking at them online but didn’t know what kind of quality. Haven’t bought from LL Bean since their backpacks were popular in the early 90’s 😆

For a sling bag, I highly recommend the one from Uniqlo. This has very surprisingly become my absolute favorite bag! It is super lightweight and I often throw it in another bag when I need/use a bigger tote. The strap is adjustable. And the price is very right!

I second the uniqlo bag rec! It’s not leather but it’s really versatile and great for casual use, walking, running errands etc. Can’t beat the price either
