Thing That’s Changing My Skin. I had an Isolaz laser treatment yesterday.  It didn’t hurt at all, and my skin hasn’t been this clear in at least a decade.

  1. Sam says:

Belle, have you heard of/tried Spironolactone for your acne? It’s an anti-androgen that’s often used for lowering blood pressure. I’ve been on it for about 6 months and haven’t had skin this clear since before I hit puberty. My chin was always the trouble area and I found out a couple years ago that dairy was a big culprit but this has been a lifesaver. Worth a look.

  2. Lynn says:

I was kind of worried that the Harvard article was going to be about how pretty she is; thank God it wasn’t, because I would have flipped tables. Still, I can’t believe it took this long.

    • Valerie says:

Lynn, I totally had the same thought! I think we’ve seen far too many reputable media outlets (NYT, WaPo, etc.) focus on a woman’s looks instead of her intellect or achievements, and then these achievements become a sad footnote to an assessment of her physical assets. *Really* glad this piece did not drivel about how cute or well-dressed Umana is.

    • Belle says:

I meant stunner, like “Whoa, this chick is awesome.” Not how cute she is.

      • Valerie says:

@Belle I know you meant that. There are just too many journalists who feel the need to comment on women’s looks in addition to their smarts, to the point that it’s become common practice.

  3. Lizzie says:

That article on how much having kids hurts your career really hits home. When I went back to work after a stay-at-home-mom stint, I was shocked at some of the questions I got in interviews — I considered telling people I was in a coma for a few years rather than admit my career lull was due to family obligations! (Kidding but not really.)

The worst was an interviewer who asked me what my child care arrangements were. When I gave him my well-rehearsed answer (“I’m aware of the additional hours this position will require, and I am prepared to commit fully”), he pressed me for specifics! He needed to know exactly who would be watching my kids. And this was in the office of a female member of congress! I was stunned.

  4. MS says:

Will you consider a broader post about the laser treatment in a few weeks when you know the longer term results? I’d love to hear how you chose it, how much it cost, what the timeframe is, etc.

    Thanks

  5. JW says:

How have you been liking the Drunk Elephant Let’s Be Clear line? I’m about 3 weeks into it and am really liking it so far and am trying to decide which full size products I should get – 1, 2, or all. I’m liking my skin so much that I’m afraid to go down to just one product, but they are priceeeyyyy.

    • Belle says:

I’m at the same point. I’m not crazy about the soap. I do love the acid nighttime serum with the pink lid. I like the gel moisturizer, especially for day. But I’ve used comparable vitamin C serums. So I’m thinking the night serum and the moisturizer, right now.

      • JW says:

Those are my two favorites as well, though I actually do like the soap compared to my usual cetaphil. I think I may go back to Ole Henriksen truth serum for vit C. Their gel moisturizer for day is fantastic, but I think I may nix the oil. Not bad, but perhaps unnecessary.

  6. Bb says:

What vitamin C do you like Belle? Also are you planning to try The Ordinary line of inexpensive skincare that’s supposed to be potent?

    • Belle says:

I am going to pick up some of their products when I re-up. I like the Ole Henriksen serum, and the Timeless serum.
