Somewhere in the vacuum between the Golden Globes and the Oscar’s, the Screen Actors’ Guild hosts an awards show. You’d be forgiven for not watching, since the show is broadcast on TNT, and neither well-watched nor well-attended. And the gowns (which are really the only reason to watch one of these snooze fests anyway, right?) are usually less than stellar. Here are the highs and lows from last night’s show:
Best Dressed (Tie)
Eva Longoria looked amazing in this platinum-colored gown by Georges Hobeika. The top of the dress should be too hot to handle, but somehow it looks elegant on Longoria. I also love the origami-like pleating and the soft, flowing skirt.
Julia Stiles also looked incredible in this navy and white ombre gown. The perfectly curled coif is also a nice touch. The only thing that I’m not sure about is the coordinating nail color. It’s a bit matchy-matchy for my taste.
Pale shades were surprisingly popular on last night’s red carpet. Natalie Portman, Lea Michele and Amy Adams all chose light colors. And while I greatly preferred Natalie’s grecian, strapless gown to the V-Day nightmare she wore to the Golden Globe’s, Amy has her beat.
Others on the best dressed list? Mila Kunis in Alexander McQueen, Claire Danes in Louis Vuitton, and Sarah Hyland in Max Mara (I can’t believe I’m saying that either). And while I’m undecided about Christina Hendricks’ dress, I think her hair and makeup was the best of the night.
Oh, and Tina Fey didn’t wear black. Small victories, people, small victories.
Worst Dressed
If Glee’s Naya Rivera has a stylist, she shouldn’t be fired, she should be flogged. This is a beautiful woman who never, ever looks nice. And the SAG awards were no exception.
This dress looks like a trashy negligee than it does an evening gown. Making matters worse, Rivera’s too casual hairdo and overly made up face. The whole look is a bit reminiscent of the awkward kid who hires a professional to attend the prom with him. But Rivera was hardly the only sartorial disappointment walking down the carpet.
January Jones’ gold and black Carolina Herrera just strikes me as heavy and overwhelming. Like the dress is wearing the woman, instead of the woman wearing the dress.
Jennifer Lawrence could have made a splash in hot pink OdlR, but her hair and makeup were mismatched and overwhelming. Too much eye makeup, too much product in the hair.
As for Kim Kardashian, she has the exact opposite problem, she’s not wearing enough makeup to compliment her opulent gown. She may have been trying to go for the natural look. But when the “natural look” requires so much foundation that you’re more matte than a Photoshopped magazine cover, you have to layer on the color. Otherwise, you just look unfinished. Like your makeup artist ran out of product.
So did you have a favorite look from last night? Or a least favorite, as the case may be?
Amy Adams has a great stylist. I've yet to think of a time she wore a bad dress. I liked the dresses from last night much better than the choices from the Golden Globes.
I love Jane Lynch, but she needs to stop wearing princess prom dresses. Angie Harmon does, too. I just do not think pastel pink and purple shades are appropriate dress colors for grown women. I thought Hailee Steinfeld's look was perfectly age-appropriate, though.
I am not usually big on ombre, but I loved the dress Julia Stiles wore. I liked the dress Amy Adams wore, but it didn't look like it fit. She needed a little more room.
Eva Longoria's dress veered too close to trashy territory. Same with Paz de la Huerta and her gross matching lipstick.
And this makes me sad to say, because I love her, but worst-dressed was easily Julie Bowen. WTF was up with that jumpsuit?
Angie Harmon's dress was BY FAR the worst! I mean… really?
Hadn't seen it before I wrote this last night, but yes, she was the worst. She looks like a lawn flamingo.
I think Christina Hendricks looked like she was in a heavy bathrobe, I do think Sofia Vergara's dress was a perfect fit and great color.
Tina Fey looks so good! She needs to wear color more often.
And I love Kim K. I like the “natural look”, but hated the nude lip with that plum dress.
And I usually hate ombre, but Julia Stiles was by far the best dressed of the night!!
Mila Kunis was best dressed! Loved the dress/hair/makeup combo!
I disagree about Christina Hendrick's makeup — I think against her lovely red hair, the makeup made her look SCARY. Like, the eyes were just TOO much.
That ombre dress was amazing.
I second the comment about Hendrick's makeup – way way too much. And her hair looked great, but only from about the ears down. The dress was awful.
I actually liked Kardashian's though – she really doesn't need to over-do it and I think she looks better with less (although yeah lighten up on the foundation).
I thought Mindy Kaling looked nice.
Oh I completely disagree about January Jones. I think the dress suited her perfectly. Love loved it!
Ombre navy is tooooooo goood.
