Career Style: Recess = Sweaterdress

Jan 31, 2011

Unlike most profession, Capitol Hill staffers have whole weeks (months) when the Boss isn’t around and the dress code is a bit more lax.  Think of it as one long casual Friday.  Unfortunately, some Hill Staffers get a little too casual.

Jeans are fine for work, if styled correctly.  But the Uggs, t-shirts and occasional sweatpants are not acceptable attire.  This is still Capitol Hill, a professional work environment deserving of respect, even during recess.

So what do I like to wear during recess?  Well, if the weather’s right, my preferred attire are sweater dresses.  They’re warm, comfortable and it doesn’t take much to make them look chic.

I kept the color palette very neutral with an oatmeal-colored dress and coordinating brown and rose gold accessories.  I’d add a pair of dark brown tights, but I wouldn’t add a belt.  This dress has more of a relaxed fit, and I wouldn’t want to mess with that.

If you’d like to know where these pieces came from (particularly the awesome dome ring that’s under $50), head over to my Polyvore page.  I’d post it directly, but Polyvore and Squarespace have connectivity issues.  Also, the dress couldn’t be clipped, but it’s $50, and can be found here.

I went to the polyvore page, but couldn't see where the sweater dress is from?

    Nevermind…just read more carefully. Sorry!

LOVE the neutrals, and I wear them often. But how do I keep from looking to washed out? And not a clown? Its tough pairing the appropriate makeup with a neutral palette.

MidwestChic: I don't like brightly-colored makeup, so whenever I'm wearing an outfit that's really neutral, I wear a pair of bold bright earrings. That brings color near my face, without making me bust out colorful makeup (which some women can pull off, but it's just not me. I might be scarred from wearing blue eyeshadow, pink blush and red lipstick at one too many dance recitals, though!). I have three pairs of earrings in particular—turquoise, coral and jade—that all do the trick perfectly.
