Recently, I was thinking about how to return to this blog after some time away, preceded by a year of unreliable content. Do I just reappear like an ex sliding into your DMs with little more than a “Hey.”? Do I make a big announcement with florid promises of new content? Or do I just take a moment to reintroduce myself to the women who have supported me, laughed with me, and argued with me for going on 18 years?
Definitely that last one.
When I started this blog, I was a single, 26-year-old Capitol Hill staffer living in a studio apartment, working weekends at a tanning salon, living off cereal, just desperately trying to find a pair of shoes that didn’t massacre my feet while commuting. Now, I’m a 42-year-old attorney, living in a America’s most boring city, in a house where something is always being remodeled or repaired, with two dogs, a husband, and a toddler who thinks ketchup is a food group, looking for pants that don’t pinch my Mom-bod if I have to sit for 12 hours straight.
What can I say? Things change. And while this blog is still here, it is changed as well.
In some ways, CHS never recovered from the pandemic. Suddenly, no one needed work attire, everyone was depressed, and we were all just trying to survive in fiery hellscape of unknowns. Career wear no longer meant the same thing to the 25,000+ women who visited this blog every month, and it’s just tough to write a fashion guide when one reader needs trompe-l’oeil sweatpant-jeans and another needs a full business suit and high heels. Add in the fact that I am increasingly disinterest in living my life extremely online in order to sell “MUST HAVE!” Amazon finds to women via Instagram, and I’m not sure whether this blog is a throwback or a relic.
Faced with what felt like an unsolvable problem, I started to lose interest in blogging. Tack on the emotional upheaval of doing IVF, having a baby, almost bleeding to death in an Emergency Room hallway, walking away from the political career I’ve had since I was old enough to vote, and just trying to survive the vagaries of raising a child and worrying about aging parents . . . and here we f**kin’ are.
But in a quiet moment this weekend, I realized something: When it started, this blog was as much about my life as it was about fashion. And even today, when CHS is at its best, it’s because I found something that I love and want to talk about. So I made a plan for how to get back to that, let’s get started.
* * *
Do you feel tired and worn out? Haven’t drank eight glasses of water in a single day since your first child was born? What if I told you that your skin could look well-rested, hydrated, and dare I say, glowy, with just one miracle product?
Behold, Dior Forever Glow Star Filter. It’s Zoom’s “Touch Up My Appearance” feature, but for real life.
The first time I used this product was at a conference in Montana. After my presentation on the finer points of legislative drafting, no fewer than six women told me how great my skin looked. The next day during lunch, two more women who I’ve worked with for years, asked me what cosmetic procedures I had recently paid for to “fix my skin.” Thank, I think…
While this Before-and-After certainly benefits from the photo shoot lighting, I would still call it an accurate representation of the Star Filter’s results. My own personal results are less shiny, but no less brightening. It really is that good. I apply the product prior to my Merit foundation and I rise from the dead like Lazarus.
Now, cards on the table, this bottle will set you back $55. But I bought mine in November, and with regular use, I’m still going strong with about-half the supply. Also, if you’re spending <$75 on skincare products and <$30 on foundation, I consider the Star Filter makeup insurance, it’s here to ensure you get the most out of the money you already spent.
Still need a dupe? My TikTok-loving teens tell me that this $8 e.l.f primer is as close as you’ll find in the drugstore aisle.
Ladies, you know I don’t sing praises lightly, but Star Filer is the only makeup product that, when Sloane grabs it out of my bag, I snatch it back like it’s a grenade. Some things are just not for playing with.

Thank you for coming back. Having been an avid reader for more years than I’d like to tally, I appreciate your words and recommendations more than any other Internet source.
Agree on thanks for coming back! I always look forward to seeing what you’ve got on tap for us!
I bought Dior Forever Glow and generally enjoy it, I typically mix a small dab in with my moisturizer to get a subtle glow. The one thing that gets me is, at least to me, it has a very aggressive scent that doesn’t seem necessary.
Another great alternative is the L’Oreal Lumi Glotion–offers a similar finish at a much lower price point.
I haven’t noticed a scent. I guess I’ll have to give it a whiff tomorrow.
I second Lumi – it is amazing and so cheap. Use it everyday.
I still love reading the content, even though I’ve also left DC from the late 2000s and early 2010s. I know I can trust your judgment so even if all the baby products aren’t relevant for me (no kids), I still love reading and find it worthwhile to stop by every day.
Thanks for coming back. I’m a little bit older than you but love the fashion advice and your honesty. Have been reading for over 10 years and yours is one of the few blogs I consistently look to. In fact, while you were on your hiatus I was beginning to panic! 🙂
Solidarity! As a then-26-year-old judicial law clerk to a 42-year-old attorney with a first grader, I feel like your content (and how it changed over the years) has tracked my needs pretty well and I have appreciated it!
Any advice for getting a good color match online for this kind of product? I struggle with ordering foundation and even when I have made the effort to drag myself to a Sephora to get expert advice, I feel like the expertise isn’t as good as it used to be.
It seems like no matter what time/day I go to Sephora, it always feels so frantic. The associates are nice but not super helpful, and the store is filled to the brim with teenagers with full makeup and manicured nails. I just need to not look like I’ve risen from the dead, and I need to do it in the two and half minutes my toddler gives me before he causes some sort of mayhem.
I find the Shade Matching Tool at Sephora gives you a reasonable idea when there are only a few shades to chose from. https://www.ulta.com/discover/shade-finder
The biggest thing with this is knowing your undertone. https://www.byrdie.com/figure-out-undertones This is a good how-to.
Long time reader here, and I am so happy you are back. I really enjoy your content and how it has evolved!
Missed you! And now I will be buying that product because since turning 40, the glow is gone from my once oily face.
Glad your back! I don’t know what your blog has become but I know I like it! I too was a congressional staffer when I started reading and have since left DC and had a kid. Even if your suggestions aren’t perfectly tailored to me (I even kept reading when I took a career break to go to culinary school), I enjoy your content and point of view as well as the community you’ve created.
While my life (and work dress code!) have changed so much from when I started reading the blog, you have always had recommendations that have helped me with wherever I’m at.
And thanks for the Gleanser rec! I’ve gone on to buy other products from the line and I can absolutely tell a difference in my skin.
I’ve been reading this blog for almost ten years since I was a baby intern! I still love reading everything even if it doesn’t always match my lifestyle, it always feels applicable in some way. I trust your recommendations over everything else. I’ve never kept up with any other blogger/influencer ect for so long!
Thanks for this recommendation! I have been looking for a new primer.
If you need a little encouragement to keep sharing your recommendations, I bought the Prequel cleanser two weeks ago and I am obsessed. I’d never really cared about my cleanser (with the logic that it mostly gets rinsed off), but this one is special. My face glows and feels so fresh but not dry after using it. Anyway, thanks for sharing reviews we can trust.
It’s SO good. Can’t beat the price on the Prequel products.
Thanks for coming back! Even if not all of the outfits hit my office dress code it’s always a source of fresh ideas – ways to combine colors/textures. Product recommendations are A+
Two mid price primers/highlighters I like – Iconic London and Saie.
Welcome back! Another long long time reader, former Hill staffer, and now fed. And guess who is going back to work full time?! I have a closet full of clothes I haven’t worn in 5+ years, from before this body had 2 kids. I’d love advice on rebuilding a wardrobe, and I love your life hacks and advice. Thanks for being here!
Glad you’re back in whatever form that takes. We’re all just doing our best – don’t be too hard on yourself!
Thanks for being here. We all change do it makes sense the blog would. I’m almost 10 years older than you, and my work place became less formal faster than yours. Your business casual days helped me out. The these days, where it feels like anything goes I like coming here to feel like I get advice to avoid looking dated or like I gave up on myself. I was just thinking I’d love advice on some beloved basics that are long in the tooth. How to keep them up to date sort of thing.
I’m so happy to see you back! I’m a long-time reader, and I look forward to your posts….and also appreciate the need for pausing and self-care.
Re: primers, I have another option, inbetween the Dior and elf, price-wise: ICONIC LONDON
Underglow Blurring Subtle Glow Primer. I’ve been using it daily, and it just gives a little something extra.
I’m glad you’re still writing! I love the content here and on Instagram. I also left DC after spending my 20s there, and moved to a less glamorous (is DC glam? I remember sweating and wearing sneakers to commute, but it’s relative) town. Now in my late 30s with kids, yours is one of the few blogs I still check and trust. Its refreshing to find original content on style, career, and aging. So many other sources seem to cater to a much younger audience, and there’s a dearth of content for this age range. I need a space that’s not recommending crop tops!
I too want to echo my longstanding appreciation for your blog. Although I’m still in DC, my office has shifted permanently to virtual with a half dozen or so in-person meetings. But what I love about blog is that there is something for everyone. I appreciate that you aren’t constantly hawking products that you yourself don’t love and that you’re willing to share when you’ve been disappointed with a purchase. I would like to add a +1 on the prequel cleanser love!
Love your blog, thanks for keeping it. I am your age and found it when I was 30, been following ever since. The content keeps being relevant. Thanks for coming back!
I think I found you 13 years ago?! Since then I’ve introduced this blog to so many friends, have left DC, have been married, been divorced, bought my own home, changed jobs, etc and even with no kids, your blog content still resonates and is so helpful. Glad you’re back – we missed you!
I have missed your blog over the past few days!! I was worried about you. An older long time reader, you have kept me up to date on fashion and life in general. So glad you are going to continue !
FWIW, I am a long-time reader who is about your age and I never have expected consistent posting of anyone I read/follow. The whole idea of social media and the constant feeding is still somewhat new to me and I don’t hold you, or anyone else I follow, to that standard. I read your work because it is good and thoughtful, as long as that is the same, I will read however often, or not often, you post. Thank you for all you do.
Thanks for keeping the blog going in its current format! I’ve been reading since 2012, and while I have also left DC and in-person offices, I still love coming here to keep my wardrobe fresh. I also wonder whether the social media sites are headed for a fiery death, so it’s a comfort to know old-school blogging is still around.
Just wanted to say thank you for the rec! I just got
Dior bottle and I’m down with a cold (whether from work or small kids, who can say?), and it makes me look remarkably alive.
