Holiday Prep: A Foolproof Party Look

Oct 30, 2024

I cannot believe that it is the end of October. Christmas Party invitations are already falling into my inbox, so I need to find a foolproof outfit that works for dinner gatherings, cocktail parties, and work functions. And why not make it sparkle?

Mixing a sequined separate with a simple sweater is a great way to look dressy without trying to hard. The pairing gives you extra, while looking a little bit effortless. Here are four combinations that caught my eye.

1. Chartreuse // J.Crew Cashmere Crewneck and J.Crew Paillette Skirt // Bright colors are wonderful for parties because you can wear modest pieces or simple basics in bold hues to make the look festive. Now, this sequin skirt is anything but basic, but it still looks amazing in this chartreuse. Add a red lip for maximum impact and keep the jewelry simple (like these silver teardrops).

2. Black // Reiss One Shoulder Sweater and Alice + Olivia Pants // For a sleeker look, this off-the-shoulder sweater is the one. I adore the slouchy Jennifer Beals vibes. Pair these with a wide-leg trouser covered in sparkles for a look that is festive but easy.

I like this look with hair up and a black drop earring. If you are looking for a less expensive sweater and pant combo, try this one and this one (also in plus).

3. Coral // Ralph Lauren Cardigan and Rotate by Birger Midi Skirt // Coral is not a winter color, but this skirt was not going to be left behind. I mean, look at those gorgeous flowers. I couldn’t believe the skirt was <$300. But if you’re not feeling coral with coral in months that end in -R, why not swap it for black?

This affordable peplum top is a great option. Just remember to keep the shoe strappy to bring lightness to the look, a boot will be too heavy here. Going for all coral? You can make the look a bit more fall with a burgundy shoe (which are an event in themselves.

4. Bronze // H&M Sequin Skirt and J.Crew Boucle Turtleneck // Finally, we’re closing this look out with a bronze-brown option to pull in the fall’s hottest color palette. I love the boucle texture on the sweater with the sequins. I would pair this one with a lighter shoe or these amazing suede chocolate tall boots. I’d also wear it with a simple gold earring.

The consulting firm I work with is hosting a November happy hour for our tenth anniversary at a local winery. Laid back, on a Tuesday… this is just the style inspiration I needed.
