Two Ways: A Sweater Dress for Work (From Home)

Jan 17, 2024

If your life is lived working both in the office and from home, you need a wardrobe that can do both.  A casual, cozy sweater dress is a great piece for both home office and professional office.  Here is how to style it.

Dress // You may recognize this ivory, ribbed sweater dress from such classic films as this blog last winter. I own this exact dress, and have found that I can style and restyle it for different occasions.  The weight is heavy enough to be warm, but light enough that you can layer pieces over it.

Also on offer, I love this a-line Vince sweater dress.  And this Lulu’s dress has a chunkier texture that gives it a little more punch.

Work From Home // Be comfortable and work ready in this knit-on-knit look.  The sweater is J.Crew and currently priced at 60% off sale.  It is an incredible staple piece if you work from home (or just like to be cozy warm) or love a chunky knit over a sheath dress to soften the look.  The sweater is currently final sale and the size recommendation is accurate — you want to size down.

I kept with the neutral color palette, adding a moccasin slipper because who is going to see my feet?  This is a Zoom work call, not Only Fans.  These slippers from Minnetonka are a classic.  I am in the mini-boots from Ugg.

For the accessories, I picked these Quince mini-hoops that I just bought and I am obsessed with.  They’re dainty, and pretty, and classic, and under-$30.  And that’s it, a work from home look that is styled, comfortable and makes you feel like you got dressed today.

Professional Office // The key to this look is to belt it under the blazer, not over.  Without the belt the whole look feels a little schlumpy.  With the belt to define the waist and tailor the sweater dress, the look feels intentional.  It really pulls the outfit together.

The blazer is from Vince Camuto, but almost any sleeker, one button blazer will work here.  You want it to fit just slightly away from the body.  Too fitted will feel forced.  This blazer moves well and is comfortable.  I wear it with the coordinating pants as a more relaxed suit option.

For the belt, I chose this Lauren plaque belt.  You want a skinnier option here to keep the look from feeling heavy.  Ann Taylor also has a great option.

These boots are the Goldy from Loeffler Randall.  A bit taller than my beloved, so comfortable, Gias.  They give you a chic look for work in a walkable package.  Need something more affordable?  Try these boots from Naturalizer.

Lastly, I included the Quince hoops and this awesome tote bag from Everlane.  It’s a really unique style and perfectly useful.  I chose the black, but if you want to mix it up, the cognac brown would look great here as well.

As for the hair and makeup, the less fussy the better.  Wearing a tight bun here will take the look to a strict librarian place, but loose and down will give it a real effortlessness.  Also, since this is all neutrals, you will want a lip color.

Ordering the dress, love the look. Unfortunately the JCrew sweater is gone in my size. Looking for another cozy sweater to go over the dress.

    I love both looks.

Do you find the sweater dress to be warm enough to wear around a chilly house with bare legs? What footwear would you wear if you were to wear the casual outfit on an errands run?

I do, but my house is only chilly sometimes. For a run out of the house, I would put on my flat cognac tall boots or sneakers depending on the conditions.
