A few months ago, I bought a “cool girl” sweatshirt from Clare V. I thought I might wear it occasionally to a relaxed brunch, to run errands, on the plane. I did not anticipate that I would wear it to cocktails with friends and to a work lunch with dress pants. Now, I own three sweatshirts that I wear whenever I want to feel like I’m wearing something stylish but casual.
If you’re shopping for a chic sweatshirt, there are two retailers you should visit: Shopbop and Anthropologie. They have a wide selection of choices in all manner of styles. Here are a few of my picks.
The Printed Sweatshirt // This Puma floral sweatshirt is really fun. It would look cool with leggings under a puffer vest. It would look great with white denim and sneakers. Or try it with black trousers and a cool boot. Looking for a different print? This marble print sweatshirt is chic. This heart print sweatshirt manages to be joyful without being cutesy. Or grab a simple stripe.
A Statement Sweatshirt // Cafe Kitsune is as famous for its logo as it is for its coffee. This sweatshirt advertising the ‘it girl’ spot is on major discount. The neutral color palette also makes it an easy wear.
Clare V’s sweatshirts have a similar feel with a bit more color. H&M has this Paris sweatshirt for a gentle price. I wouldn’t wear a concert tee if I didn’t attend, but this Fleetwood Mac sweatshirt lets you rep a classic band without co-opting a specific tour. Lastly, this Ritz sweatshirt caught my eye on Instagram; then, it made my eyes pop out of my head with its price.
The Elegant Sweatshirt // Can a sweatshirt be elegant? It seems impossible, but somehow this one is. Varley says their brand is about “quiet confidence,” and that basically describes how I feel when I wear their clothes.
I own this Varley Milton sweatshirt, and I love it. Something about it makes me feel like I should be grabbing a coffee while walking past the shops in a seaside California town. I also own their simple Mae sweatshirt. Frankly, the whole line of elevated, stylish basics is great.

This post brought up memories of the Splits 59 sweatshirt (via Anthropologie) that got away years ago. I just may need to track this one down! For what it is worth, I’m a big fan of M.M. LaFleur’s Ellie sweatshirt, which (although plain) I find looks professional enough on Zoom.
Love this concept. Please do cool girl t shirts. I live in T shirts. I’m at a loss. Plain gets boring. I’ve got band t shirts. I’m not a floral kind of girl. And it NEEDS to be 100% cotton or other natural fiber, NO polyester. And NO cropped shirts. I have no idea where to even start shopping.
