Begin/Again: Jackets with Movement

Jan 3, 2024

My new job requires hours of sitting and typing.  My blazers are not built for that.  They’re all too restricting — tight in the shoulders, snug in the elbows.  So when I bought a knit blazer that gave me full freedom of movement, and looked great for important Zoom calls, it was a revelation.  Here are a few jackets to give you a professional look with the ability to lift your arms.

I bought this Boden cropped knit jacket in the navy and red color way, but exchanged it for the stripe.  I adored the look and the comfort, but the stripe was more versatile.  I did enjoy how the red looked like I should be playing Mahjong at the club while sipping a spritzer.

While my suit jacket days are limited, there are plenty of days when I want to look more pulled together.  A bomber jacket is a great way to do that in a way that is still relaxed enough for a casual office or work from home.  This boucle bomber from River Island is a great option.  I also like this bomber-style sweater jacket from Mango, which is just a very stylish, modern cardigan.

This inverted notch blazer from Gibsonlook gives you a sleek, office-ready look in a comfortable package. I wear mine over t-shirts, lightweight sweaters, and knit blouses.  Comes in for colors for just under-$100.

Whether you toss it on over a simple t-shirt dress or wear it over leggings, this moto jacket from Gibsonlook is the perfect topper.  Dressier than a denim jacket, cooler than a blazer.  I love the green, but it comes in four colors if you prefer something else.

Thank you. I’ve been WFH for 2 years and only wear sweater blazers now.

Ann Taylor has a few blazers with a lot of stretch, esp. the double knit fabric. They can go from Zoom to a conference.

What was the sizing like on the Boden jacket? The reviews are a bit mixed with that.

I took a medium. It gave a good, slightly boxy fit. With a smaller bust, I probably could have done the small, but I wanted to be on the safe side.

Last year you posted a Nic+Zoe knit blazer, and it stuck in my head for weeks. I got two blazers from that brand. They are washable and comfortable

The J Crew sweater blazer is IT. They are often on sale on the factory site and options are plenty on Poshmark. I have 5 colors and it is my absolute wardrobe cornerpiece.

I love that River Island bomber, but struggle with how to style it. Thoughts?
