On reading the headline, I was hoping you were going to be providing examples of slouchy tote bags that were “horizontal” rather than “vertical” (if that makes sense). I’ve been scouring sales for a black leather work bag (for laptop, clutch, water bottle, a few files) that isn’t so structured. I have an old Cole Haan that’s perfect, but so well-loved that it’s falling apart….

Another option that may be in line with what you’re looking for– I have been using the oversized zippered tote bag from Portland Leather Company for the last two years as my work bag (easily holds laptop, a small clutch, water bottle, a bag for cords and wires, and more) and receive so many compliments on it. It also comes in a non-zippered version, if you’re less prone than I am to knocking over your bag 🙂 I’ve exclusively bought from their “almost perfect” section, and have never noticed any defects, so that’s also a place to look to save a few more bucks (although right now they are running a sale that places “normal” merchandise at prices even below the “almost perfect” stuff!).
