Plaid blazers came back into style in 2018, and they never left. If you have one sitting in your closet, you might be having trouble styling it. This business casual outfit is the perfect layered look to get that blazer back into the rotation.
This winter look takes layering to a new level. The button-up, the cropped sweater, the slouchy blazer — it all works. Here’s how to recreate it.
Blazer. I chose this J.Crew Sommerset Glen Plaid Blazer because I liked the mustard accents. The blazer also comes in a striking blue and black plaid combination. This Bar III blazer and this black-and-white Norma Kamali blazer caught my eye. Plus-size? Try this Standards & Practices blazer.
Sweater. For layering, a cropped sweater is the best choice. If you’re adding a shirt underneath it, you don’t have to worry about it being too short, but the shorter length makes the shirt a bit more visible. I like this H&M cropped sweatshirt — the chunky knit is great. This Goodnight Macaroon sweater is also a good pick. Petite? Try this one from Banana Republic.
Worried a sweater under a blazer will be bulky? Try this sleeveless sweater from Everlane.
Blouse. There is only one place to buy good-quality button-ups, Banana Republic. Their Riley shirt is awesome.
Jeans. Madewell’s 10″ Skinny jeans are some of my favorites. I like that they come in tall and taller lengths. I know some of you are over 6′ and that it’s a struggle to find jeans long enough. They also come in plus and petite.
Boots. I own these Marc Fisher boots, and they’re awesome. They’re very solid and stable to walk in. I hardly notice I’m wearing heels at all, which as a woman who has switched almost 100% to flats, is a big deal. If Zappos doesn’t have your size, try Nordstrom. Looking for them on sale? Try The Rack.
Accessories. A cool pair of hoops and a classic watch are always a solid choice. These Hammered Metal Hoops are the best — unique, but versatile.

Love the look but there is no way I can wear a sweater under a blazer.
KCV–I’m right there with you! Pretty-but never going to happen for me. I wear sleeveless shirts under jackets year round.
Same! Any blazer I buy that’s loose enough to fit over a sweater would be baggy over a regular blouse.
Same here too! It might work with the white button down and maybe a chunky grey scarf instead of a sweater.
+1 for these boots! I own them and they’re comfortable enough for a night out or an NYC commute. I’d even consider another color!
Really like this! Fits in with the more casual vibe nowadays
