Over the past few weeks, I’ve been posting photos of some of my work outfits to Instagram. As a result, a surprising number of people have asked me what I use on my hair to make it so shiny. Let’s talk about it.
Briogeo Be Kind, Be Gentle Shampoo // I discovered this shampoo last winter, and I adore it. I shampoo almost every day (I know, I know), and this shampoo doesn’t dry out my hair. The formula is 98% naturally derived using fruit and vegetable fatty acids, so it’s also a clean shampoo that smells amazing.
dpHue Gloss+ Conditioner // If I had to guess, I would say that this conditioner is probably the primary reason my hair looks so shiny. The dpHue Gloss+ is my once (sometimes twice) per week pick me up. It refreshes my color, smoothes and shines. Using it every day would be overkill, but I like my color to stay looking fresh.
The gloss comes in 1o colors and one sheer formula. The coloring formulas use semi-permanent color, so you don’t have to worry about significantly changing your color. I use the medium brown shade, and it works well.
Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Conditioner // On the days that I don’t Gloss my hair, I use this deep conditioner on my ends. It keep my hair healthy, even with all the heat I put on it. And healthy hair is shiny hair.
Clairol Root Touch-Up Color Gel // Getting a salon appointment is tough, and my greys are coming in fast and furious in my late 30s. So I use this root touch-up gel when I need to give my own roots a brush up.
The color is semi-permanent and the formula thick enough that it doesn’t drip. There’s no mixing, and the brush tip makes application easier. L’Oreal has a similar product that has a few more color options and a similar formula and applicator.
As for styling products, the volume spray and hairspray I use don’t advertise any shine benefits. So I’m going to guess it’s a combination of these products or, perhaps, just the dpHue conditioner giving my hair that fresh salon shine.

Do you use gloves when putting on the Gloss+ conditioner?
I’ve been occasionally using Overtone coloring conditioner, and I’m curious how it compares.
I use the same shade of DP Hue, and I do not myself use gloves. I’m sure that would be easier, but my current method of furiously scrubbing my hands with soap and a washrag has resulted in no stains thus far. I have been pretty happy with it; it doesn’t cover all my white hairs, but it definitely helps, and it does leave my hair feeling nice and soft (if not as shiny as Abra’s!).
I do not, it washes off very easily.
Yay thank you for this! And thank you for opening the door of shame for those of us who wash our hair daily. Sorry not sorry. Some of us can’t pull off the dry shampoo. I got a sample of the Briogeo at Sephora and it is lovely, no joke, made my hair better than it’s ever been.
Also, one more plug, for those of you that *haven’t* seen her hair pics, they are legit. This is not filtered instagrammed “shiny hair” influencer posed photos with photoshop. This is in a bathroom with a cell phone while on break. Love you as always, Abra!!
DP Hue gloss ordered! Seriously, your hair is so shiny. Thank you for sharing!!!
Does the dpHue Gloss+ rub off, leave color on your pillowcases, etc.? I fear semi-perm color for that reason.
I do it in the morning, but no, I have never noticed any rub off.
To again agree with Abra, I use it at night, have white pillowcases, and have had no problems.
Thank you for this post! I don’t know what part of quarantine is it, but my hair is so dull lately. Just ordered that gloss.
Are you still mostly styling your hair with hot rollers? If always looks great!
Yes. Almost every day.
