When the isolation period began, I assumed it would last a few months. But I didn’t realize what a few months would feel like. I’m constantly searching for new coping mechanisms, new ways to entertain myself, and new hacks to making working from home easier. Here are a few things that I’ve found.
One. Kopi Smart Mug and Base Set. Haven’t had a cup of warm coffee or tea in a while? Me either. Something always seems to distract me, and by the time I get back to my morning pick-me-up, it’s cold.
OHOM makes the Kopi smart mug to help keep your beverage hot while you chase kids, answer phone calls, or just forget where you put your coffee. Nordstrom only has the set left in stock. But I found a single mug in a similar style on Amazon.
You can also just buy a plug-in mug warmer. Or you can invest in the Yeti insulated mugs that I see so many bloggers raving about.
Two. Prive Riveaux Blue Light Glasses. I had a screaming headache on Monday. Could not figure out why. Then, I realized that I wasn’t wearing my blue light glasses. An hour later, my headache was gone. Eye strain is real.
These Prive Riveaux Alchemist glasses are my favorite. Coming up a close second are the The Book Club’s clear frames.
Three. Amazon Laptop C-Table. The best light in my house is in our formal living room (which is the silliest invention ever, but old house). So if I need a mood boost, I like to work in there, but having my laptop on my lap all day is less than ideal. This c-table can be used when you want to work in bed or on the couch, and it’s a game changer.
This brass c-table with a marble top from Wayfair is nice. This hexagonal brass table is also worth a look. Or go with this all black number. Did I mention that they’re also a great place to set a wine glass?
Four. AirPods + Case. My AirPods (original or pro) are essential when I’m wandering the house during Zoom calls. The dogs need to go out. I need more tea. I want to apply a face mask? You know, normal stuff.
But, as much as I love my AirPods, I tend to misplace the charging case. This $6 case with hook is a lifesaver. I just clip it to the drawer handle on my desk or to my purse handle if I’m out of the house. They also make a case for the original AirPods.
Five. Birdie’s Starling Flats. What are real shoes? After weeks inside my house, I had forgotten. I bought these Birdie’s Starling Flats for a Saw It On Social review, and I loved them. They’re just as comfortable as my slippers, but I can wear them in public and outside.
Six. Slimming V-Line ChinMask. I am getting such a bad case of ‘text neck.’ Looking down at my computer is causing creases in the skin on my neck and making my chin droop even more than usual. Propping up my laptop with a Moft stand helps, but it’s not a complete fix.
This slimming and lifting chin mask helps tighten your jaw line. The loops are a bit uncomfortable, but if you trim them a little bit wider it helps. As for my neck, I’m waiting for delivery on my LipoFix neck mask. Will report back.

I got this laptop stand from Amazon that goes way higher than the Moft – I can easily prop up my laptop at eye level and even a bit higher. It doesn’t win in the looks department but does the job just fine.

Definitely report back on that neck mask! My neck creases have been out of control lately and I never remember noticing any before…
So funny that Grace Atwood was also talking about c-tables!! I’m loving quarantine content
Everyone is looking for hacks to the same problem — namely, how do I work from my couch without my laptop on my lap? She had great suggestions too.
Random non sequitir:
Abra, on my google news feed there was an article in i *think* the Financial Times about the decline of JCrew, Brooks Brothers and other preppy brands and your quotes were GREAT, seriously. Your comments about the decline of that style and what caused it really got me thinking….and I completely agree with you. As a 40 something Gen Xer, I still love that look but never really understood why my 20something colleagues won’t even consider it. Thanks for a great insight!you should have linked it here for us, I would have never known!

Interesting comments from FT readers..
The comments ARE interesting, and worth the time to read and make you think. I tend to sway preppy-ish 3/4 of the year with the exception of summer, which is all about boho maxi dresses.
Part of me wonders how much this is tied to individuals’ own economies. At 38, I am just really entering the time in my life where I can afford to buy the best of what I want. I may still have to save up for something, but buying a more expensive item is doable. I would always buy the best that I could afford when I was younger, but usually that was Target, and awesome finds at the goodwill. (Which I still LOVE to do)
The other questions that I have is it seems that fast fashion is really the driving force behind so much of the shift. We feel that we need to have the newest, best, most exciting, whatever we saw on the so and so the influencer…. and so we tend to buy more things cheaply and any fashion line that is more expensive gets passed up. Obviously JCrew ended up losing sight of who its customer was and that played in a lot.
So interesting, I’d love to hear others thoughts on this. I feel like this would be a great conversation on this blog.
Comments were behind a pay wall…anyone willing to summarize?
Per your recommendation I bought these cheaper blue light glasses from Livho and they help SO.MUCH. Thank you for suggesting them! I wonder how many headaches I could have avoided (even before quarantine, I spent more than 10 hours on my computer a day). Really appreciate it! Also, good call on the c-table! I got one a few months ago, before and unrelated to quarantine, and it has been a life saver! Finally, have you seen results with the chin lifter?

Love the blog, always! For anyone who ever buys or builds, bad lighting is not exclusive to old houses. The best light is always going to be on the south side of the house, second best light on the west. When planning a build you want to orient your commonly used spaces south and work around that light paradigm. Most people don’t know that, and developers certainly don’t care, so it is a fairly common problem. Before I realized this glorious fact I lucked into an old house that is west facing with a kitchen facing south, and it is amazing. People rave about how light-filled my house is. I’m only posting this in case anyone who reads it can ever benefit from the knowledge. I’m so glad to know it as I plan a home, because I am making a point to keep utilitarian rooms north and east. I hope the info can be useful to others as well!
150% recommend Yeti.
The one linked comes with a lid that the sipping hole doesn’t have removable cover- it’s good for letting your coffee/tea cool slowly. They also offer replacement lids/different models that are fully covered so you’ll have hot coffee or tea the entire day.
Likewise I only use Yeti’s for the beach, golfing, hiking etc because ice is still there after many hours so I still have cold refreshing water when it’s hot out.
