The Find: Affordable Active Wear

Jan 17, 2020

Many of us have resolved to exercise more in 2020.  And one of the things that makes working out easier is to have enough stylish workout wear that you never worry about having clean gym clothes.  Because, while it sounds a bit silly, wearing the “good” workout top makes going to the gym just a little better.  Here are a few places to find affordable active wear.

Nordstrom Rack // One of the best selections of athletic wear is at the Rack.  They have Nike items, Outdoor Voices, and Z by Zella.  The selection online is pretty good, but the selection in-store is usually better.

My go to choice from Rack is always sports bras.  I sort by size because it makes searching easier.  This Natori bra is my current favorite because I hate pulling sports bras over my head (it hurts my shoulders).  This Alo bra is also nice because the perforation let air in to keep the sweating down.

JCPenney // If you need inexpensive workout attire, Penney’s is the stop for you.  The clothes come in all sizes — petite (petite plus), plus, tall (tall plus), and maternity.  The styles are actually pretty cute, and the prices are the same as Old Navy, while the quality is slightly better.

Their in-store brand, Xersion, is worth a look.   The leggings are good quality, but the outerwear is my favorite.  This sherpa sweatshirt makes it possible for me to walk to the gym even when it’s cold.

Athleta // Their sale section is always worth a look.  Their Uptempo top is one of my favorites, and it’s in the current sale.  I love the thickness of the top and the shirttail hem.  My only complaint is that the fabric at Athleta seems to hold smells more than other athletic fabrics, so I have to use sport detergents.

I waited to buy a couple of things I was looking at until they hit sale, and my patience was rewarded.  I picked up these camo leggings (they’re kind of fun) and this funnel neck sweater (that I was eyeing for forever, and that I now need in another color).

Old Navy // Always a reliable pick.  They have a wide selection of activewear in many sizes — plus, petite, and tall.  The high-waisted Elevate tight is a reader favorite.  I like this black-and-grey leopard sweatshirt is a fun topper for commuting to the gym in style.  But their performance tee is my favorite.

Lululemon // The “We Made Too Much” section is not exactly affordable, but definitely discounted.   I have tried many leggings, and I have found many that I like, but only one that I love — the Lulu Wunder Under.  So when I can snag them at a lower price, even a slightly lower price, it’s better.  These Align pants with a tonal side stripe also caught my eye.

I really like the GapFit collection. You can find things dirt cheap on clearance and I think it holds up better than Old Navy. I particular like the Breathe v-necks and tanks.

FYI don’t sleep on Athleta’s non-workout pants. The joggers (in linen and a thicker ponte) as well as the Wander and Stellar pants are so forgiving and comfortable while also being flattering. If you are between sizes, post-partum, etc, its the brand I recommend most for pants. They made me believe I could wear real clothes again (instead of sweatpants and leggings).

If it doesn’t gross you out, you can buy lots of great gear on Poshmark. I’ve bought a lot of great lululemon gear anywhere from $15-$35. I wash it a few times before I wear it.

I’m doing the Yoga Box from Yogaclub and so far I’ve been happy with the quality and value. The items are from major brands and are heavily discounted.

I do love Athleta, and all my stuff has held up really well to the point that even when stuff is on sale I feel like…why? I have no gaps in my workout wardrobe, and some weeks I’m getting in 5 workouts. My white Speedlight tops have yellowed a bit, but if I wash them occasionally with a generous splash of white vinegar I don’t notice any smells.

Check out Senita! It’s online only but they have a great selection of active wear and it’s all pretty affordable. They don’t do site wide sales very often but I think everything is worth its normal price. My favorite are their leggings, the alpine leggings (they have cute laser cut perforations) are super cute for cardio or for barre and I love the lux leggings for working out or lounging! The strappy bra is super flattering for me!

HIghly reccomend Amazon’s Core 10 collection for leggings. The pocket leggins are the best and are $29!
