What a week. We’re approaching a transmittal deadline (when bills from the House must pass to the Senate, and vice versa), and things in the Capitol are quite frenetic. I’ve gotten in so many steps this week, my Apple Watch probably thinks that I’m cheating. Here are the products that are keeping me sane as the world spins madly on.
I’ve talked about my love of Rothy’s pointed-toe flats before. I just picked up a new pair, and I am still so in love with them, I find it difficult to believe.
I bought this Black Honeycomb pair because my one complaint about black points is the white trim on the heel. With this shoe, the trim is a dark-cobalt, so it’s less noticeable. I also like the slightly thicker material.
I have washed my black points in a mesh bag six times, and they are holding up very well. So if you’re looking for a shoe that will look newer, longer, this is it. I’m also thinking about buying this orchid pair because the vibrant color is just so gorgeous.
Elizabeth Holmes’s 15-minutes of infamy continue. The ABC podcast covering her rise and fall at Theranos is a hit. And now this Vanity Fair piece looks at Theranos’s last days and how, in the aftermath, instead of being contrite, Holmes is almost defiant.
It’s hard as a feminist not to hold the former Silicon Valley wunderkind to a higher standard than I would hold a male CEO, but listening to the podcast, I feel a sense of betrayal. She embraced the role of female trailblazer, and her unethical conduct has undoubtedly hurt those who will follow. Not to mention the damage it has done to the careers of former Theranos employees.
Last week, I went to see a new aesthetician about a micro needling treatment to minimize some of my acne scarring. During our conversation, I confessed that after 24-years of acne, I was feeling demoralized about my skin. And for the first time, a skincare professional said something to help break my shame, “Your skin produces more oil, it’s a skin type, not a failing.”
Because I don’t need much moisture, but I do need some, she recommended this Epionce Lite Lytic moisturizer. It’s light, very gentle and moisturizes well. It also has a fresh ginger scent. It gives me a little moisture without overdoing it.
I have tried every home-delivery meal kit on the planet. Some taste great, some do not. Some are easy, some are not. But the one thing they all have in common: there’s always one meal at the end of the week that we didn’t eat. Recently, I noticed that Plated sells meals in my local Safeway. And they have been a godsend to me since I’ve been living alone.
The flavors change every couple of weeks, and the selection is usually fairly diverse. This week, I saw steak quesadillas, Thai beef lettuce wraps, chicken marsala and a pasta dish. They cost under-$20 each and feed two people. So I can buy one, spend 20-30 minutes cooking it, and have two meals. It’s a nice option if you like to cook, and want to eat at home, but don’t want to buy $40 worth of groceries to make a single meal.
This article talks about where you can buy them. They’re also available through Instacart, which is such a lifesaver when I’m too busy to shop. If you haven’t tried Instacart yet, you can use this promo code to get $10 off your first order. (It should go without saying this post is not sponsored. I just think this is a great option, which I’m loving. But I do get a little kickback if you use my code, which any Instacart user who refers people gets.)

I too work for a state legislature (with a size and method similar to Montana’s) that is also in session and just over half way done – stay strong and know your work is appreciated! We can do this!
So interesting that Plated is in stores! Would love to try it but alas, it’s not carried n any stores near me.
They must’ve heard the complaints because the black points are back to the blue stripe on the back.
I’ve been mulling a rothy’s purchase but the price is holding me back. I usually replace my black flats not because they look old but because I’ve worn the heel down compelety. How long do rothy’s heels hold up for such a steep price? Or do they do well with resoling?
I’ve had mine about a year, and I think I could go another year.
Would you use them for a long walking commute? I know one woman who was disappointed in how long they lasted (I think it was close to six months), but she had a pretty long walk on city sidewalks everyday. I’ve just done light commuting, wearing around the office, and worn them on vacations where I did walk a lot, and they’ve held up great. They’re so comfortable, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy them again when they do eventually wear out, though I hope that won’t be for a while (I already own a pair of the points and a pair of the flat and am contemplating the loafer). It’s pretty easy to find a $20 off code to bring the price down a bit (anyone who’s bought them has a code to share). They’re seriously the most comfortable flats I’ve ever worn.
I used to wear my Rothys for my 2-mile daily commute and I had no complaints. The only thing is that they are not super warm for those winter commutes but they are champs in temperate seasons. I own two pairs!
Definitely not super warm.
I’m finally retiring my most-worn pair of the black flats, which I’ve had for over two years. Never resoled them, and I’ve been wearing them pretty much constantly for all that time, including many trips and traipsing around castles in France. On to the black back-up pairs I’ve bought since my original purchase!
I know this sounds crazy, but could you use a black sharpie on the white rim of the Rothys?
If you’re interested in the Theranos story, I highly recommend the book Bad Blood. It’s written by the Wall Street Journal journalist who originally broke the story, and it’s basically all the material that was too long to include in his newspaper articles. It’s an incredible read: even knowing exactly how it’s going to end, it’s hard to put down.
Second the recommendation for “Bad Blood” — it was so bananas (I’m a good way!)
I was coming down to the comment section to also recommend Bad Blood! It was SUCH a good book!
Belle, are you still doing the referral code for Rothy’s? I know I can google one, but I learned of them here first and would just as soon benefit you (or another commenter) as someone random. I’m in the market for some new flats and want to give them a try!
Seconding the above commenter – Bad Blood was SO GOOD. My jaw literally dropped every few pages, and I’ve recommended it to tons of people who have come back to thank me for the recommendation after reading.
Hang in there at work!
Hi,
I bought my first pair also through Belle’s recommendation. I am planning on buying another pair soon, so if you would like I would love to both get our $20 off. https://share.rothys.com/x/nzqYts
PIggy-backing off of Kelly, here’s mine: https://share.rothys.com/x/1EiTsY
I used Anna’s Rothy’s referral link – thanks! Here’s mine, for the next person: https://share.rothys.com/x/BucmW6
I also love my point toe Rothy’s and now wear them almost exclusively to work. Last week I got the new Rothy’s sneakers and they are AMAZING! I have the black camo and I couldn’t be happier with them.
Have you read Bad Blood, the Theranos story?? It’s fantastic. I work in governance with corporate boards, and it was just so interesting… they’re working on a documentary, too. Highly recommend the book.
You can machine wash the shoes?! Woah! Also some of the reviews said they sized up a size. Is that what folks here are doing?
All the Rothy’s shoes now have the blue strip at the back (rather than the white that the black points had when they were first released). The orchid color was the first one that I bought (almost two years ago) and I LOVE it. It’s a surprisingly versatile color, and I get compliments on the shoes all the time.
