Ask the Edit: Sweater Sets for Preppy Ladies

Oct 30, 2018

Are you an admirer of Jackie Kennedy, a woman who adored a twinset?  Or do you just love a classic?  Here are the best places to find sweater sets, including a more modern option.

I am preppy and basic and looking for great sweater sets. Any recommendations on where to go?

Embrace the basic.  It’s nice to be edgy once in a while, but it’s also nice to be able to wear your clothing for more than one season.  And sweater sets are basic in the best possible way.

Brooks Brothers might make the best classic twinset on the market.  They sell their classic Merino wool cardigan for $78.  The matching shell is $48.  They also make a Supima cotton option, but it only comes in two colors.

Want a more modern way to wear it?  Brooks Brothers sells a coordinating silk camisole in seven colors.  It gives you the look of a twinset with a hint of sultry, sophisticated femininity.  Such a good look.

Another option is, of course, J.Crew.  Their Jackie cardigan and shell are worth a look (now, in plus-sizes).

Talbot’s also makes a cardigan that is a cotton blend with a hint of cashmere.  Here is the matching shell.  Talbot’s offers misses, petite, plus, and plus-petite sizes.

Looking for a less buttoned up cardigan twinset?  Anne Klein makes one with a more relaxed, longer cardigan.  It’s a nice set that comes in four lovely colors; I especially like the mauve.

Uniqlo also makes matching sets in their marino wool. I was skeptical about the quality, but have been pretty impressed by their sweaters.

My go to for sweater sets is Land’s End. They’re always on sale and hold up really well, I wear them for years. I’d recommend sizing down though.
