I’ve been in Montana for the past week, and what a week it’s been. Last Friday, it was 73-degrees. On Sunday, it was 37-degrees and snowed donut-sized flakes. But by Wednesday, it was cool and sunny with chipmunks and buntings stealing seed from my Mom’s bird feeders. Just another late spring in Montana.
Whenever I come to Montana, I become a minimalist. I pare everything down to the essentials. Skincare, makeup (if I wear any), hair care, wardrobe, everything becomes simpler. So let’s embrace that simplicity and talk about what I’m wearing, reading, and cooking in Montana.
The Elizabeth and James x-shaped Windrose Ring is my favorite. Every couple of years, I replace a scratched up, faded one for a new one. And after almost seven years, I still get compliments almost every time I wear it. It’s a classic with attitude, and it’s simplicity makes it perfect for layering with other pieces.
If you love the look, but you want a fine jewelry piece, this EF Collection ring is amazing.
In the midst of the Gilded Age, a woman from small-town New York marries one of the wealthiest men in America. Cinderella gets the slipper back. But it was until after his death, that Allene Tew’s life really began. From New York City in the flapper era to the chateaus of a Europe gripped by the Russian Revolution, An American Princess is a wild, historical ride.
Keeping my skin looking its best when I’m in Montana is a delicate dance. You must exfoliate away the dead skin, yet hydrate like it’s your job. Bobbi Brown’s Buffing Grains for Face can be added to any face wash to face oil to create an amazing scrub. If you’re hunting for something cheaper, grab a $10 Morihata charcoal-infused face scrubbing cloth. It exfoliates as well as any scrub.
As for hydration, I am still obsessed with Tony Moly Banana Sleeping Pack. Massively hydrating for when you need more moisture than a simple night cream can provide. And it’s an affordable $17.
I’m not the 26-year-old staff assistant that I once was. But a career of sitting has made wearing leggings a tenuous balance between being comfortable and feeling good about my body. That’s why I’m all about compression leggings.
I used to buy Lululemon almost exclusively. But last winter, I’d had enough of their (now former) CEO’s bad behavior, and went looking for an alternative. I found these Old Navy compression leggings. My favorite navy pair also comes in petite and tall sizes. And $33 for leggings with frequent sales, sounds better than $98.
I love rotisserie chicken, but since the ones in the supermarket deli are typically cheaper than the whole chickens in the meat section, I just buy pre-made. But this post on how to cook a rotisserie-style chicken with your Insta-Pot has me rethinking that decision.
Do you have an Insta-Pot? We bought one this winter and loved it for making short ribs and stews. I donated my slow-cooker and my rice maker once I bought it. If you like comfort food that doesn’t take all day, this appliance is for you.
Whether you buy or make your rotisserie chicken in the Instapot- save the bones and freeze them. I have stopped buying chicken broth for soups or cooking and cut down on waste by using the Instapot for chicken, veggie, and turkey broths. We keep a ziploc in the freezer for chicken carcasses and another for veggie scraps. Peeled a carrot, put the ends and the peels in the bag! Chopped of the woody ends of asparagus, put them in the bag! Don’t toss the parsley stems, but them in the bag! We even keep the seeds and tops of hot peppers for broths we plan to use for chicken tortilla soup.
When the bag is full, I add the scraps and bones with some herbs, salt, and pepper to water in the Instapot and cook on high pressure for 30 mins. Voila!
PSA – I used this sheet mask the other night and when i took it off my skin was glowing! It lasted well into the next day. I want to try them al. https://www.amazon.com/APIEU-MILK-ONE-PACK-7-Sheets-Banana/dp/B0719JQ76Q
I second those Old Navy compression leggings. I basically buy whatever color goes on sale and have amassed quite a collection. For the price, I can’t believe how durable they are. I’ve had some pairs for years, which means MANY miles run in them and MANY wash cycles!
As I’m reading this, it’s 92 degrees in DC. Looking forward to returning to the swamp? ????
Your weather this year reminds me of the first year I lived in DC (05). It was an endless winter, then it was 1-million degrees. No in between. Yuck. But everyone has bad weather years.
I make my own gentle cleansing grains for super cheap, that tends to work better for my sensitive skin and budget. I get 1 lb of bulk kaolin clay, 1 box of colloidal oatmeal and mix them together, then I add about 1/4 cup of rose petal powder. I’ve added things like cornmeal before, but honestly it’s just too coarse for my skin. I add this powder to my hands after oil-cleansing, mix it with warm water to make a paste and massage it over my face and neck. It gently exfoliates and gets all the oil off, then I use a washcloth to wipe it off and tone my skin. Low cost, low waste and works great!
My boyfriend (who does the cooking in our house) is addicted to the InstaPot.
I love it because it means I only have to wash one pot. 🙂
I’ve had a really tough time with the Old Navy leggings. They area always too small, but are often cute and nicely-priced. Any advice on sizing? Is it really possible I can be a large or XL in leggings when I’m a size 4-6? Is that just how tight compression is? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
Thanks for the Old Navy compression pant suggestion! I’m always on the hunt for good pants that don’t ride down when working out. Lululemon is too expensive for what you get these days and Under Armour’s quality has been disappointing. Also, I noticed these pants are half off Today!
Very true. At least most offices have moved away from requiring pantyhose (the worst). I’ve never worked on the Hill, but I did work for a law firm whose female employees were encouraged to wear skirt suits and pantyhose rather than pantsuits or dresses with bare legs. Very glad I’m not there anymore.
P.S. My previous comment was meant as a response to my exchange with Belle- not sure why the site won’t let me respond in the actual thread. Sorry!
