The Commute: No. 11

Jan 31, 2018

“I raise up my voice—not so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard…we cannot succeed when half of us are held back.” ―Malala Yousafzai

Mommy Issues. Women fill many office roles, the most common is Den Mother — remembering birthdays, scolding bad behavior, doing the decorating.  One women discusses why she refuses to be saddled with being the office mom.

Pink Ladies. This fuzzy LOFT sweater is giving me all the vintage 1950s vibes.

Clean & Dry. Why women love men’s deodorant.  As you know, I wear this Old Spice, so I can relate.

GTL. Need affordable workout wear?  The GapFit jacquard hoodie, this Athleta crossback tank, and these high-rise Athleta leggings should get you started.

It’s Pouring. Saving money for a rainy day is supposed to be on everyone’s agenda.  Well + Good discusses why it’s so critical and how to formulate a plan to get started.

Clear a Path.  Boden’s sale and clearance section is my favorite.  They have 331 dresses on discount.  This sleek Olivia dress and Irene printed ponte dress both caught my eye.

Walking Away.  To every woman who’s out there trying to find someone, here are classy ways to end a bad date that’s going nowhere.

Say Something.  This wishbone necklace can offer a little luck or this rose quartz a little love if you’re looking to put a few good vibes into the world.

What I’m Making for Super Bowl Sunday.  New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Queso.  I’ll be needing all the Juanita’s chips (the best).

What I’m Watching. Kyle and I are loving this Netflix series “Dirty Money” about financial crimes.  The one on a maple syrup theft in Canada was hysterical.

What I’m Using. Want whiter teeth, this Supersmile set will get you there.

What I’m Reading. Black Dahlia, Red Rose: The Story of America’s Greatest Unsolved Murder.

    Abra,
I too am eyeing the Boden Olivia dress in pink. But how would you style it with layers for a cold office?

    • Erin says:

I actually ordered the Olivia dress in blue and it was beautiful–however there was some weird bunching in the tummy area and the dress was a little itchy so it was hard to imagine wearing it all day long. I was sad to return it but it didn’t seem like something a tailor could fix easily.

I love my men’s deodorant (Dove for Men in Clean Fresh). I like the smells better! I’m straight though, so I’m not exactly the intended audience of the article. I also feel like it does a better job, even if it’s just anecdotal/hearsay.

  3. Orlala says:

Funny, I didn’t know women buying men’s deodorant was a thing! I wear men’s deodorant because the scents of the women’s deodorants make me sick and give me migraines.

  4. Katrina says:

I’ve worn men’s deodorant for the last ten years, once I realized that my antiperspirant was building up on and yellowing my shirts and staining my sweaters. Also, I hate that tacky feeling that antiperspirant leaves on my skin, which is then really difficult to wash off. As far as I can find, deodorant (just deodorant, without antiperspirant) is not available in women’s versions. As a bonus, the guys stuff smells great. It makes me feel just a touch more BA as I walk out the door to do my daily reckoning.

  5. SC says:

Old Spice deodorant is the best, it keeps me drier than any women’s product and doesn’t leave a nasty white residue either. I like the Fiji, Wolfthorn, and Amber scents.

Just a recommendation on the Athleta items posted. They are great for yoga/studio workouts but anything with a higher intensity I wouldn’t wear them. They do offer awesome options for those workouts, in lots of styles and colors. I swear by their Sculptek tights, and their Speedlight tanks/t-shirts that stay in place and wick away sweat.

Re: deodorant. I’ve struggled for a while to find deodorant that will work because I sweat a good amount and have been known to get a little ‘ripe’. I finally found a combination that works for me – the Ultimate Man Body Scrub Soap + Toms antiperspirant/deodorant.

I don’t know if it is the extra exfoliation and oils in the soap, but I’ve tried every soap/deodorant combo around and this is the only successful one so far. Now, will it work in a DC summer? who knows…
