The Escape: Abra and Sarah Visit NYC

Sep 19, 2017

This week on The Escape, we talk about dressing for a casual trip to New York City.  Explore Sarah and Abra’s different New York City styles, and get recommendations on where to shop and eat.

Abra’s New York City Style

I was a late convert to the glories of New York City, but it’s one of my favorite places.  I try to visit NYC at least once per year (though I’d like to go more often).  My visits often include a mix of visiting friends and dropping by the showrooms of some of my favorite brands.  That means finding the balance between comfort and style.

I’m headed to New York next month, and this Pinterest photo is my inspiration.  Comfortable, chic, and perfect for a busy day on the go.

Striped Shirtdress. This T by Alexander Wang shirtdress is the perfect three season dress.  You could layer on an olive field jacket or wear it with a pair of simple boots.  Love the dress, but not the price?  Target’s New Day line has a similar dress for $25.

Moccasins. I am the biggest fan of moccasins and drivers for walking long distances.  These Coach Frederica loafers were my gateway pair.  The orange pair above, from M.Gemi, are very comfortable and come in wide selection of colors.  Want a trendier option?  Try these incredible Ulla Johnson slides.

Cognac Satchel. One of the most versatile bags you can own is a cognac satchel.  It pairs well with summer colors, fall hues, and black.  This Vince Camuto top handle satchel with a wide strap is comfortable for carrying long distances.  For something more ladylike, this Forzieri satchel is a good choice.  Of course, the dream bag is this Mulberry flap and buckle satchel.

Big Sunglasses.  A big city essential.  I like my sunglasses in tortoise; it’s less severe than black.

Simple Jewelry. After losing a David Yurman ring while traveling, I no longer travel with my good jewelry.  These simple rings–from Elizabeth and James and Mr. Kate–give just enough shine.  I also like these simple disc drops from RL.

As for places to visit, even though I hate Italian food (down with tomato-covered carbs), I never miss Eataly.  Even if it’s only for gelato.  My favorite spot for brunch is Jack’s Wife Freda, then I’ll stroll the 10ish blocks north to feast on Doughnut Plant.  And if you want to do some shopping, Racked has the complete NYC guide, but Otte and Century21 are my favorite stops.

Sarah’s New York City Style

New York City is my one true love, and an assault on the senses, but I could easily see myself settling into the hustle and bustle of a city like New York.

I travel to NYC 7-10 times a year, and it’s almost always for work — which means packing light enough to make room for 10-20 pounds of camera and computer gear. When I’m there on a work trip, it’s often to assist with a restaurant opening, which means waking up early and running around with a camera or two. Finding that balance of comfort, style, and professionalism is key.

Scalloped top. Nothing quite gets me like a cute scallop cut. This color block option screams out “art director,” which makes it perfect for my wardrobe. This blush wrap blouse would be in the same color palette, but with a little more coverage. I’m also a sucker for keeping things simple, so this bright white tunic would be a fun, flowy option, too.

J.Crew Marties. Fitted cropped pants are a staple in my wardrobe, and since they’re always available in a good range of colors, the J. Crew Marties are just my style. Wear them with heels or flats… and they’re machine washable, which is a big plus (and an upgrade from the Minnies).

Stacked summery heels. The mules above are by Dr. Scholl’s (believe it or not!).  If light leather isn’t your thing, they also come in black. Want something with less of a heel and more support to get those steps in? These strappy black wedges would keep your toes happy all day and all night.

Statement earrings.  When it comes to jewelry, I’ll choose earrings instead of a necklace any day, and the longer, the better. The white beaded tassels above can be worn with pretty much anything, and would stand out no matter what color or length your hair is. This sky blue pair would earn you a few compliments, too.

Not into the tassel trend? These colorful hoops from Anthropologie need to get into my closet, stat.

Sturdy shoulder bag. As a photographer, I need a light, sturdy bag that can fit a camera, two lenses, a laptop, and a tripod. The absolute best option for that is the ONA Capri, which I’ve had for four-plus years. This baby has been at my side, literally, for almost every single one of those days — and she has a long way to go. The best part? The older she gets, the better the leather looks.

Sunnies. Last but not least, my pink mirror Ray-Bans — which keep my California eyes from going blind on a bright day. Not in the market to spend the $$ for the brand name? I’ve actually had some great luck with the YOLO sunnies from Urban — these aviators and these round lenses would keep your spirits high, both uptown and down.
