Like you, I love my harry josh dryer but have been so curious about the dyson. My stylist has the dyson and used it on my hair the last time I got my hair done, and it was amazing. I played with it a little: very light weight, nice to hold, magnetic attachments (concentrator, diffuser), and very fast at drying. Seriously tempting–although still so expensive. Although apparently you can get a discount if you are a licensed stylist.
Ugh, I’m so guilty of number one. I’ve always thought I shouldn’t apologize for a delayed reply because I’m often one to apologize for my very existence, and I’m told as women, we should stop doing that. When I can’t resist the urge I say “Thanks for your patience with my reply” so I’m thanking rather than apologizing.
I never thought about the effect it has on the overall perception of how long a reply should take, especially since in my role at work it is often me who gets to dictate when a response is necessary in a conversation.
What are your thoughts on S-Town? I listened to all 7 episodes on a road trip this past weekend, and found myself captivated until the end.
I liked it until the last few episodes where it was more about who John B. was and less about the gossipy salacious stuff. I am a terrible person, but I listened because I was interested in the juicy crime/gossip aspect, not the personal interest aspect.
Oh crap, sorry Belle! Not a spoiler truly, but still.
I splurged on the Dyson during the last Sephora 20% off sale, and even though I felt guilty about spending that much on a hairdryer, I don’t regret it at all! It’s so much faster, quieter, and easier to use than any hairdryer I’ve ever had, fancy or otherwise, and it’s pretty foolproof (I’m TERRIBLE at styling my own hair, but even I can get a solid blowout on my wavy/curly hair in 20 minutes with the concentrator). I’m happy to answer any specific questions you have about the hairdryer.
How are the temperature controls? I just cut off all the heat damage in my hair so I’m weary of high temp hair tools.
I’m less wary of heat damage because I don’t frequently blow out my hair all the way. But I haven’t had a problem with scalp burning or anything like that at the highest level. I believe the dryer actively regulates the temperature of the air—if I’m remembering correctly, it checks the temperature multiple times per minute to keep the air from blowing out at temps that are too high.
My stylist did not recommend the dryer. She said it caused a lot of frizz. I am sticking with my Harry Josh for now
I have the Dyson. It’s fast and much less noisy (I wouldn’t call it quiet), but not worth the price. And if you are planning on traveling with it, the transformer bit is really heavy.
That Reem Acra gown. Am drooling.
Abra- do you have any tips or things to do in Spokane, WA for a few days?
Well, there really isn’t much to do here, but there are a couple of things. I like Riverside State Park’s Bowl and Pitcher area. It’s an easy hike, and a pretty part of the state. I would go to Couer d’Alene (35 mins away) to see the lake, have brunch at the resort. I would definitely have ceviche at Zona Blanca, and Szechuan at Gordy’s on 30th. If you like vineyards, there are a few wine/cider tasting opportunities in the Greenbluff area. The rose garden at Manito park is nice. Ice cream at the Scoop is pretty good.
And that’s about all I’ve got…
Thanks! Here for a few days and its lovely so far!
I got the Dyson in December and I like it now, but it was so different that any other dryer I previously used, that it took me about a month to really figure out how to achieve my optimal style with it. I love how much quieter it is than a regular dryer and I find the heat settings to never dry out my hair, even with almost daily blow drying. Biggest complaint: storage. The cord is bulky and really challenging to store effectively with the additional components. I’d love to hear if anyone else has any ideas for storage on the Dyson, too.
I bought a Dyson and it didn’t live up to the hype. It wasn’t as light, quiet, or effective as I had hoped. And it was a ROYAL pain in the butt to return, too. Their customer service was really terrible and acted like they’d never had a return before. Try before you buy if you can!!
Catching up on the weekend…I’m going to sound like a raving fan but also try to point out some of the downsides.
I owned the Harry Josh and then got the Dyson for Christmas. The boyfriend is a sucker for any kind of new technology and is always amazed at how much of my life I spend drying my hair. I have normal length thick wavy/curly/intensely frizzy hair (looks almost exactly like book 1 Hermione), and I love it! I took it to the salon right after I got it, and one of my hairstylists was so convinced by its ability to dry my hair faster that he bought one too.
Let’s put it this way– my hair takes so long to dry that my appointments are scheduled for extra time, and I can definitely say the Dyson shaves MINUTES off the dry time and makes my hair noticeably smoother than the Harry Josh. It gets hotter than the HJ, so I think the smoothness is due to my hair getting fully dry and not frizzing from residual dampness.
Re the comment about frizz– it is so powerful that it will ruin your hair if you don’t use an attachment. I didn’t use one the first time and was horrified. Couldn’t get the brush through my hair. Then I used the medium width concentrator and realized that’s where the magic is. I also love the curly hair attachment for the first time ever. I always thought those were pointless crap, but I use it now since the Dyson’s heat makes it actually work to dry but not frizz my hair when I want it curly. Before I always had to let my hair dry overnight on a soaking wet pillow if I wanted to let it be curly.
The other nice thing about the Dyson is that you can turn the heat all the way off with the heat button without having to hold the cool shot. The heat button clicks down in 3 increments and also clicks off. The first thing I said after turning it on and clicking the buttons was “this will be perfect for drying Lady’s hair!” Lady is my dog. I normally painfully hold the cool shot the whole time I dry her bc I don’t want to burn her with the not-so-cool lower temp setting on other dryers. Thanks for the $400 dryer hon, I’m using it on the dog 🙂
The cord on the Dyson is less than elegant, but I do like how long it is (will be great in a hotel room when I’m drying my hair at a mirror ridiculously far from the plug bc BF is showering) and that its smooth and round, so it doesn’t twist up like normal cords.
Is it worth it? It’s expensive. If you aren’t comfortable spending the money, don’t (duh). Initiallt I was very interested but didn’t feel comfortable spending that money. Knowing what I know now, I would definitely buy it if I hadn’t gotten it as a gift. That said, I’m comfortable with the occasional $$$ splurge, especially if it saves me minutes every morning. If your hair is already relatively easy to dry with a Harry Josh or other pro dryer, I don’t think the extra powers will be worth it to you. If you have a drugstore dryer and normal, not-too-curly hair, there are plenty of pro dryers that work great. But if you’re getting the extended appointments at the salon bc even the pro dryers take a ridiculously long time to dry your hair, the Dyson is for you. It is also for you if you have a small fluffy dog and don’t want to hold the cool shot the whole time you dry her.
