You can be too goal oriented. At least, that’s the lesson that I am learning in my own life. You can focus too much on points A and B and your goals list, and you can miss a lot of the little things in between. Then, you’ll discover that those little things were actually a big thing called, life. Perhaps this sentiment is best expressed by the philosopher and intellectual Ferris Bueller: Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
1) I stopped eating a daily breakfast in 1996. Once high school started, I decided that that 15 minutes would be better spent sleeping or curling my hair. Priorities, ladies, priorities. However, this article from Forbes on why skipping breakfast is bad for our heart health has me stocking up on cereal and yogurt.
2) After what felt like the longest summer sale on record, Reiss has stocked some beautiful new items. I adore these modern, sexy pointed-toe pumps. I also love this high-neck belted coat and this rust red, sculpted sheath.
3) When Kate Middleton stepped out onto the stairs of the hospital last week, I doubt she realized that so many people would wonder why a woman who gave birth less than 48 hours before wasn’t in swimsuit shape yet. Naomi McAuliffe from The Guardian sets these fools straight with a delightful amount of wit and brilliance.
4) I needed to buy a gift for a friend’s little girl. I labored for a while about dolls and books and clothes. Then, I remembered how much I loved my Snoopy Sno-Cone Maker when I was a kid. It’s one of my fondest childhood memories. She loved it.
5) Someone created a burka-clad superhero who fights for the right of girls to go to school? Slow clap.
6) Looking for a pair of shoes/boots for hiking. I haven’t purchased new boots since Clinton was in office. I was thinking about these Merrell Salida hiking shoes. Any suggestions from outdoorsy ladies?
7) Urban Daddy is a great lifestyle site. I consistently find good restaurant reviews, product recommendations and event listings on their page. Last week, they posted about an alarm clock app that requires users to get out of bed and take a certain number of steps before it will turn off. This could be especially beneficial to someone who hits the snooze repeatedly–not that I’ve ever done that–and a much better choice than the Clocky, an alarm clock on wheels.
8) I adore these bow-front flats from Coach. They’re not inexpensive, but they have the same ladylike look as the Ferragamo Varina flats and are a bit more modern.
9) At least once per week, someone asks me what eye shadow I’m wearing. My usual shade, Stila’s Oasis, is the perfect hue of sandy gold. Their makeup line may be a little more miss than hit, in my opinion, by the eye shadows are definitely winners.
10) Want to have your mind blown by scientific innovation? Imagine that you could travel from New York City to San Fransisco in under an hour using a tube system that moves at hyper speed. Inventors are working on such a system, and say the cost of a ticket could be less than $200. I, for one, would love to kiss the airlines and their oft-delayed, flying tin cans goodbye.
I love Merrell’s hiking shoes, mine are an older version of the one’s posted. I bought them for a hiking trip out west last year. They’re super lightweight, offer lots of stability and kept my feet dry even in the drizzly northwest.
Just be sure to get some wool hiking socks! Nothing is worse than damp cotton socks rubbing your feet all day.
For hiking I prefer my Asics trail running shoes like these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007K5GGLA/ref=mp_s_a_1_3/185-4065934-9626840?qid=1375462579&sr=1-3&pi=SL75. For longer hikes, like longer than 10 miles, I wear my Asolo boots, which you can pick up for a better price on Sierra Trading Post’s website. FWIW, I have medium to narrow feet with arches on the higher end, and I hike mostly on the dry trails of Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and Utah..
I second the rec for Asolos — I just got back from a trip to the Sierras and they were super durable and waterproof (well, until I got cocky and jumped in a puddle deeper than the boots were tall. Just don’t do that and you’ll be fine).
Re: Number 6 – I always head to LL Bean. The quality is top notch and the prices are reasonable. Not sure what type of hiking you’re looking to do, but they have everything ranging from walking shoes to day-hikers to the more hardcore boots. And there’s free shipping and returns.

I love all my Merrell shoes (I had an older version of the siren sport that held up to incredible abuse). I have narrow feet and Merrell shoes typically do well there. My mom, who has more normal-width feet, swears by Vasque boots.
I would recommend checking out REI, they have a great selection and you can return anything, even after you take it for a trial hike. That way, if the boot isn’t absolutely perfect, you’re not stuck with it (after years of blisters, I now insist that my boots be perfect).

I have wider feet and I love my Keens. After a day of hiking or hiking in hot weather, having the wide toe base is amazing! Plus your SmartWool socks fit nicely.
I will agree with the REI recommendations. Plus you get 5% back each year as a member.
L.L. Bean is always the first place I go for outdoor gear. Their products are great, their customer service is fantastic, the prices are fair, and their lifetime guarantees are legendary. If you have your heart set on a particular brand or you just need to spend less, check out Sierra Trading Post.
I almost died laughing when I clicked on the link for the Clocky. That thing looks so annoying. I can only imagine how irritated I would get chasing that thing around in the morning so that doesn’t seem like a pleasant way to start the day.
Another satisfied LL Bean customer here. I hiked Mt. Washington in a pair of their boots. By the end of the hike, I knew I’d made a huge mistake–they were a half size too small. It took a while for my knees to recover, but Beans took the boots back right away and helped me find a better pair.
Have you seen these J Crew Factory flats? They’re currently $58.50.

I am wearing them right now and they are great – I even tripped up the stairs today because I’m a klutz, and there was zero damage to the shoe’s tip, despite kicking it hard into the step.
I thought the exact same thing. Have them in the coral color and they are GREAT!
I highly recomment Merrell hiking boots. Extremely comfortable and durable.
I mean recommend, you probably knew that.
Hiking boots: Try the Ahnu Montara. I recently developed neuropathy in my feet and most shoes out are not just uncomfortable but impossible for me to wear these days. These boots however are a dream. https://www.ahnu.com/womens-montara-stability-hiking-boots/AF2128,default,pd.html?dwvar_AF2128_color=ASAU&start=5&q=hike
I second the ahnu Montara! The only pair of hiking boots that were comfy out of the box and never gave me blisters. They are light (for boots) but still provide support and protection.
what type of boots/shoes to get for hiking definitely depends on what kind of hiking you plan on doing, and how much of it. because of this, i would also recommend REI. go to the store, don’t just shop online (i know, ebates, etc) and ask the helpful shoe person at REI for help. they know what they’re doing.
I was never a cereal girl, and I loved sleep more than breakfast for the longest time…about 2 years ago, I started making breakfast smoothies, and they are the perfect breakfast on the go – a banana, spinach/kale, mixed frozen berries, and ground flaxseed – keeps me full until lunch. I even pre-stage everything the night before (blender in the fridge with the fridge stuff in it, and the mason jar I’ll drink it out of in the freezer with the frozen berries).
You should try peeling and freezing the banana as well. It will give your smoothie an even better texture.
Eat breakfast! It’s so easy and so good for you. I am remaking myself into an early morning person (shooting for 5:30 to 6:00 am wake up instead of 7:00 to 7:30 am), and getting breakfast in really helps. I am a big fan of oatmeal, egg sandwiches and yogurt + fruit. Anything protein that will hold me unitl lunch. A lot of these things can be eaten in the car or at your desk once you arrive, too.
I am also a big fan of Stila eyeshadow. I had two pods in purple (light and dark) for years, and just recently bought the “In the Moment” palette. Love it.
I shoved a handful of dry cereal in my mouth this morning. We’ll see how long I can keep it up.
