Happy Hour: A White Christmas

Dec 10, 2010

Years ago, when I was young intern, I was sitting in a bar in Georgetown when a man walked up and set a drink down in front of me.  It was a Cosmopolitan.  When I inquired as to why he had chosen that particular libation, he told me that, “all that hot girls drink them.”

This less than impressive pick-up line was rendered even more ridiculous by the fact that sitting in front of me, perfectly visible to anyone with eyes, was a Maker’s Mark on the rocks.  Had he been paying attention to anything but the sound of his own voice, he might have noticed.

Since that day, I’ve had a rather intense dislike for any drink that even looks like a Cosmopolitan.  This has prevented me from enjoying a variety of innocent cocktails that contain red juices.  So when I saw a recipe for a white pomegranate cocktail, I was intrigued.

Leola Short Dress (All Saints, $435)

White Pom Gimlet

Ingredients

1.5 ounces Stoli White Pomegranik
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
3/4 ounce simple syrup

Directions

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.

Garnish with a basil leaf and pomegranate seeds.

A gimlet is made with GIN, not (flavored!) vodka. Oy. (Not your fault Belle, mad at the sell-out bartender shilling flavored vodkas and trying to dress them up with inaccurate names!)

  2. Belle says:

I'm allergic to gin, so I didn't even know. Sorry.

  3. Norwegianette says:

Oooh, wish I had one of these to sip while watching Sanders on C-span 😀

  4. Norwegianette says:

    Senator Sanders, sorry.

  5. Stephanie says:

Truc, if this drink isn't a gimlet when made with vodka, then do you know what it's called? Thanks! The recipe as Belle wrote it here sounds amazing (I can't stand gin, honestly), but I don't want to use an incorrect name.

  6. Bethany says:

its a “vodka gimlet” gimlet is just a term to use with EITHER gin or vodka, with lime juice and simple syrup. (or rose's lime juice if one is lazy)

  7. Stephanie says:

    Great—thanks, Bethany!

  8. Amanda says:

The drink looks great (no matter what the proper name is…)! Thanks for the laugh too.
