PCT: The Travel Outfit

Oct 4, 2010

If you’re working for a Senate or Governor campaign, then you will probably spend a lot of your time in the car.  This endless campaign sojourn forces many staffers to choose between uncomfortable and unprofessional, but it doesn’t have to be that way.  As long as the candidate has a more relaxed style (ie. isn’t wearing a suit), you can wear my go to travel outfit: The sweaterdress ensemble.

For this outfit, we combine an interesting sweaterdress with leggings (or thick tights) with a pair of nice boots and a stylish bag.  I’ve kept the color palette to gray and black because it looks a little more professional than brown which often looks a bit more relaxed.

As for the dress, with my short legs this will be plenty long enough (esp. with leggings).  However, you should always make sure that the dress is a professional length before you pack it.

1.Diesel Druritt Dress (Ssense, $220)

2. Bad Ankle Leggings (Topshop, $36)

3. Ciao Bella Tori Boots (Piperlime, $149)

4. Melie Bianco Alyssa Bag (Piperlime, $99)

Because no outfit would be complete without jewelry, I chose three pieces with a lot of pop that won’t take up much room in your bag.

1. Giles & Brother Bar Studs (ShopBop, $100)

2. Love Bird Ring (Rachel Roy, $38)

3.  Gold Thorn Ring (Rachel Roy, $38)

love the post, but when i'm on the campaign trail i'll be walking 10 miles a day in one of our nation's coldest, largest states. i'm gonna need some GOOD SHOES. cute ballet flats or flat boots, unfortunately, are just not going to cut it. any recommendations?

  2. E says:

My flat boots are some of my most comfortable shoes for walking long distances. While I'm with you that ballet flats don't offer much support, well-made boots should.

  3. R says:

C, how about something like these? https://www.rei.com/product/804065 They're not the cutest boots in the world, but they look pretty comfortable and they don't hurt my eyes!

    C-

Actually, I wore the boots in this post to door knock almost 1,000 doors. They have a rubber sole, and I wore socks for extra comfort.

Or if you prefer, a pair of Pumas or like sneakers are okay as long as every thing else is chic.

I find I am really liking this look and very much liking the grey bag even tho…it has gold hardware.

  6. Suburban Sweetheart says:

This sweater dress is divine. This outfit totally my vote.

Pun intended. I'll be here all night.

Pretty much exactly what I'm planning for my upcoming transatlantic flight 🙂

Loving the posts lately!! (or maybe it's just that fall is my favorite time of year and fall fashions are what get me through the summer)

C, I don't know whether these would be too casual for you, but I have a pair and they're some of the most comfortable shoes I own. I've put many miles on mine, and they're still going strong:

Great post, Belle! I especially love the stud earrings—a bit unusual while still being understated.

  9. KLo says:

    I really dig the earrings!

I have mad love for this outfit but that sweater dress shoes way too much thigh for me.

I feel like I am in such kindred company about the ballet flats. And I am not even in the political arena (currently). But I was an assistant who had to run odd protracted errands for a Type A+ veep. I wore ballet flats one time only. I may as well have been barefoot for the lack of support and resulting discomfort.

I second the advice about anything with a decent rubber sole. That bit of padding along with a good fit make a world of difference. Especially when you have a lot of walking to do.
