Monday Outfit: A Monochrome Outfit for Work

Jul 19, 2021

When you don’t know what to wear, the easiest thing to do is wear all one color — black, white, navy.  The second easiest thing is to wear different shades of the same color.  These monochromatic looks are sophisticated and stylish.  And this week’s inspiration outfit is definitely one you’ll want to copy.

Kim Le from Hello, Kimlet knows a thing or two about professional fashion.  I love this look she put together for a business casual office.  But for my line of work, the sandals and the oversized jacket are a little too casual.  So let’s spruce it up.

Blazer // Ted Baker is always having a massive sale.  So if I need something to wear to work, it’s one of my first stops.  This tailored, powder blue jacket can be worn as a business suit or as a fun addition to separates.  It would make a nice addition to any work wardrobe that relies heavily on black, white and blue pieces (esp. dresses).

If you would prefer something more modern, this Missguided boyfriend blazer and this plaid Cupcakes and Cashmere blazer are good options.  This Aware blazer by Vero Moda is also worth a look.  Plus-size?  This Missguided blazer is worth a look.

Blouse // I chose a navy blouse for this look because it’s liable to get more wear than a royal blue one.  Ralph Lauren makes this sublime silk blouse, which if you wear them often is worth the splurge.  If it’s a bit out of your price range, this Brooke Taverner blouse from Verishop has a similar look for under-$75.  Prefer the brighter blue shade?  This cobalt blouse from Kobi Halperin is a fun option.

Pants // These ankle-length pants from Ann Taylor are a great work staple (also in petite).  Want something with a wider leg opening?  AT’s high rise trouser pant is my favorite (also in petite and tall).  Plus-size?  These Vince Camuto ponte ankle pants are a good option.

Shoes // The tan sandals in the inspiration image won’t work for me.  But these Ann Taylor mules with a cool, sophisticated style are a really fun work option.  I just love them.  If you prefer a flat, I love the bows on these Danica slingbacks and these Linea Paolo d’Orsay flats.

Accessories // Sadly, the Cuyana bag in the photo is currently not in production (you might be able to find it on Poshmark).  But I adore the oversized double-loop bag that I added to the collage.  The style is so good; it’s the best hobo bag you could ever own.

For the earrings, I wanted a pair that mixed silver and gold tone metals.  The button on the jacket is silver, so it pairs well but offers you a bit of visual interest.  This pair from Saks Fifth Avenue are really fabulous.  If you’re looking for something under-$50, this Ralph Lauren pair is flawless.

Styling // You’re going to need to break up the monochrome look with a contrasting color.  Kim broke out the coral-pink nail polish, I would recommend Laura Mercier’s Mediterranean Escape lip gloss in a vibrant pink.
