One Long Read. Your DNA test could send a relative to jail — but what does it mean for our privacy?

Two years ago, Revival was my word of the year.  Focusing on that word, and my intentions for 2019 probably saved my life.  I had been horribly depressed for 18-months or so, and thinking about how to revive myself when I made decisions led me down a better path.

This year, I chose Fearless as my word of the year.  I’ve developed so many fears in my late thirties — I’m terrified of change of failure in ways I never ways in my younger years.  So I want to approach the good and the bad in 2002 with less fear and more faith.

My social media pal Laura Palmer, she of the uber-popular RBG sweatshirt, and I collaborated on these Word of the Year cards to keep our words close to mind as we move through 2022.  If you’d like one, she is selling them on her website.  I make a small commission from each sale, but I intend to donate 50-percent of my profits to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

So think about last year, think about where you’re going, and set your intentions in one guiding word of the year.  I promise, if you take it seriously, it can change your life.

Thank you for posting about the word of the year here and in your (excellent) newsletter. The idea is very thought provoking, and may be what I need in my life right now.

  2. Amy says:

Real life friend of Laura’s here – she’s wickedly talented and funny, and this partnership between you two is so darn cool. Heading over to her site to order my print with my 2022 word, Presence, immediately. Will you autograph it for me, Belle?

  3. Elizabeth says:

Ordered a print the other day! My word for the year is “fulfilled.”

I want to feel fulfilled in my work, with my personal life, everything. I’m taking a monthly goals approach for the year…

In January, I plan to move my body for 30 minutes a day, whether it’s walking, yoga, meditation, or dancing around while cooking dinner.
