Ask Belle: Outerwear Capes for Fall

Oct 12, 2015

It’s all Ask Belle all week.  138 unanswered e-mails.  Let’s knock some of these out.

Belle,

I’m in the market for a cape that’s a reasonable stand-in for a coat (not just a sweater). I’d be willing to spend a couple hundred dollars on one, but only if I can find something that’s timeless and high quality enough to be worth it. My style tends towards the colorful and preppy. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Amy

I know Edna Mode says, “no capes,” but I love a good cape.  It brings in a little bit of chic, a little bit of drama.  It really lifts a simple outfit.  Here are a few in the under-$250 price range that might fit the bill.

DKNY Blythe Cape ($158, also in black)

I love this.  It’s the perfect mix of casual and chic.  Perfect with jeans, over a black dress, or with a pair of trousers.  The color is just great.

Calvin Klein Simple Cape ($159)

Classic shape.  Very feminine.  Can’t go wrong here.  Good evening-wear option.

ASOS Raglan Sleeve Cape ($135)

WHBM Belted Trench Cape ($199)

This is the coolest, chicest cape in the post.  I can’t believes it 50%-off.  I can’t believe it’s still available in most sizes.  Want.

Mango Wool-blend Cape ($159)

ASOS Retro Cape ($135)

Plus-size?  The only outerwear cape I could find (that wasn’t hideous) is this one from Jessica London.  There were no outerwear capes for petite ladies, that I could find.  If someone has a suggestion for petite, tall, or plus-size readers, leave it in the comments.

Ann Taylor just came out with this one, and I think it’s gorgeous… (and it’s 40% off today)

I tried on the Jcrew one this weekend– it is a LOT of cape, even on my tall and not tiny frame. I love the idea of wearing one, but still need to figure out how to style it.

Extra Petite has some great petite-friendly cape outfits. Most of the actually items are from past seasons, but I like looking at the proportions. I will probably get a sweater-cape because if my body is cold enough for a real coat-cape, my arms won’t want to be outside of it. https://www.extrapetite.com/search?q=cape
