Dressing for Valentine’s Day as an Adult

Feb 8, 2018

I don’t usually embrace holiday-themed attire.  There are no ugly sweaters in my closet, no pumpkin earrings, no flag-print t-shirts.  But Valentine’s Day gives me an excuse to wear obnoxiously pink attire without shame.

One. This lip-embroidered Banana Republic sweater is a cute option for Valentine’s Day.   I also liked this heart-print sweater from Scotch & Soda and this “love” sweater from LOFT.  Looking for a sweater that celebrates V-day in a more subtle way?  This striped, button-sleeve sweater from LOFT is Valentine’s appropriate on February 14th, and preppy chic the rest of the year.

Two. A funky pair of earrings jazzes up any outfit.  This sequin J.Crew pair are pretty in your choice of pink or red.  I also love these Corsica tassel earrings and Cocoa ball-drop earrings from Baublebar.  Need something more-subtle?  These red enamel studs or XO studs are cute and work appropriate.  For other jewelry options, I adore this tiny heart ring from Free People.

Three. Pink shoes, especially pink flats, are on call for spring.  These Rumi mules from Sam Edelman are a vibrant choice.  These blush pink Seychelles ankle boots are a lot of fun.  The mauve-shimmer moccasins from M.Gemi are a unique choice.

Want something more versatile?  There’s always the classic red flat.  These Boden Abbie loafers and A New Day flats ($20!) are both chic.

Four. Spruce up your outerwear with this cute H&M scarf, just $7.  Wear this heart-print Kate Spade scarf around your neck or tied around your wrist.  I also love the subtle glamour if this Cuccia Italia scarf.  For something designer, Alexander McQueen has a cool (but pricey) heart-skull print scarf.

Five. Perhaps the easiest, most fuss-free way to wear a bit Valentine’s Day cheer is with nail polish.  This Tom Ford Pink Crush nail polish is just pink enough without being treacly.  Want something bolder?  Essie’s gel polish in the It Factor is a bright hue.  For a selection of pink polishes, try this Deborah Lippmann Pretty in Pink polish set.

  1. I also love the Comme des Garçons heart breton, though it is pricy! https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/comme-des-garcons-play-stripe-cotton-tee/4799395
Last year I wore a black tee with white and red graphics over a black, grey, and red rose vintage-style dress. Really fun! The dress (same brand, similar style, different print: https://emilyandfin.co.uk/gabriella-pink-floral-dress) was for my bridal shower but I find myself wearing it a lot for weddings, dates, and parties.
